While we would all like to believe that we are self-aware the truth is that most of us are not. In fact, according to a study shared by psychologist Tasha Eurich, PhD, “95% of people think they're self aware, where in actuality only 10 to 15% really are.”
What is self-awareness? Self-awareness is the ability to understand and recognize patterns of thoughts, emotions and actions that impact how you experience yourself and your life and how others experience you; Self-awareness is both internal and external: how you see yourself vs. how others see you. Self-awareness is also an essential component to possessing high emotional intelligence - a quality necessary for exceptional leadership, and is foundational to personal transformation without which change is not possible.
Why should you cultivate self-awareness? Cultivating self-awareness through self-reflection and mindfulness practices results in spaciousness within that allows you to pause before responding rather than immediately (and unconsciously) reacting. With self-awareness comes the awareness of better choices and higher perspectives that you can use to advance your life in positive ways. Self-awareness also holds you accountable while leading you down the path of self-understanding. Research shows that when people know themselves better and see themselves clearly, they not only make better choices but are able to show up more confidently and communicate effectively. With self-awareness also comes self-acceptance, a necessary ingredient for inner peace, lasting joy, and living an authentic and fulfilled life.
What do your choices say about your level of awareness?
